OVERVIEW
Forests are important for the daily livelihood of people of Vanuatu. Forests provide greenery to our environment and housed the nation’s rich ecological biodiversity. Forests provide food, clean water, building materials and fuel wood for sustaining life in the rural communities. Forests are part of our culture and are a source of traditional medicine. Forests form an important source of income generator to our rural communities, and have the potential to develop some products into a significant industry which has the ability to provide jobs for many Ni-Vanuatu.

DESCRIPTION AND OPPORTUNITY
This opportunity will involve the production of Vanuatu's high valued forest species to increase current stock. Targeted high valued species include but not limited to:

  • White Wood
  • Mahogany
  • Sandalwood
  • Natapoa
  • Nangae

These high valued forest species have very high demands from both local and international markets. Increasing the current stock of these species will contribute to the Government's import-substitution initiative and export opportunities. As depicted in the above chart, without local efforts to increase stock in forest species, Vanuatu will continue to import timber from other countries. And there is huge demand for local furniture industries.

GROWTH AND CONTRIBUTION
Forestry has maintained positive growth over the last 5 years averaging 6 %. It is the second highest contributor to the Agriculture, Forestry, Fishery and Livestock sector growth.
